Spur Cross Ranch in Cave Creek is one of those rare instances where a determined group of folks managed to save several hundred acres from development and open it to public trail access. Elephant Mountain is one of those hikes.
On top is the remains of an old Native American fortification or building. The wall is quite thick, made of closely placed stones, and overlooks the steep climb you must take to reach it. Why it is there, no one knows, but the hike to it is worth the effort. Beautiful vistas of the valley and Superstition Mountains, especially Weavers Needle.
We are heading for that peak on the right
The Ranger who will take us up gathers his group
Arleen coming up the trail
They're kind of hard to see but these are some petroglyphs
We are getting closer
Our first sight of the wall
Whatever the reason these walls are quite thick
No one knows what this hole was for
As you can see we're quite high up
Looking back over the valley to the parking lot
Arleen & Sharon enjoying the view
Looking across the valley to Weavers Needle in the Superstition Mountains
Lookin across to Cave Creek way off in the distance
I love teddybear cholla. Except when I get it in my socks!
Looking the other way across the valley
Heading back down
Looking back to where we were. You can't even see the walls
